Main responsibilities:
- Understand and effectively employ the current chemical permeation test methods utilised by Gore on commercial and developmental materials from Gore’s materials platforms
- Form a clear & critical assessment of external chemical permeation test methodologies and standards currently in use globally. This should include their relationship to Gore products and competitive products, and a clearly developed understanding of when to employ relevant methods
- Develop the state of the art in Gore’s test capability and understanding
- Hold ownership for the safe and effective operation of the test laboratory
- Contribute to New Product Development and current business needs as both the expert and a team player
- Be able to contribute significantly to the professional image of themselves, the team and Gore
Main requirements
- Hold a technical degree level qualification in chemistry, polymer science, materials science or a related discipline
- Be comfortable and competent in demonstrating good laboratory practices with chemicals, including chemical handling, disposal and risk assessment procedures; ideally with previous significant experience
- Be numerate and have experience in performing analyses and manipulating data, preferably using statistical methods and in an industrial setting. This should include the interpretation, reporting and presenting of results.
- Can plan, initiate and execute their own work as well as contributing as a team player and influencing in a team setting
- Demonstrate good communication skills and be able to interact effectively and build good relationships with internal platform and business customers, key stakeholders & within the NPD teams
- Be able to challenge constructively, whilst meeting Gore culture expectations
- Have experience of external liaison with academic, government or industrial test laboratories, authoritative bodies and experts
- Can build good relationships within the team and with external experts and authorities
- Ability to travel infrequently within the UK, EU and to the US, to Gore sites and to test houses and conferences etc. This would be around 10% of the associate’s time but would be more than this in the first 12 months
- Hold UK citizenship
- Background in textiles and / or technical garment systems would be an advantage though is not essential
Within Gore’s unique culture you need to be passionate about what you do and a relationship builder with open communication who is intrinsically motivated to do the right thing. This role is a development opportunity for someone with a deep scientific expertise and knowledge, coupled with a wider commercial capability.

The Division of Cell Biology I at the Netherlands Cancer Institute – Antoni van Leeuwenhoek Hospital (NKI-AVL) is looking for an enthusiastic and highly motivated PhD student.
Tumor cell invasion involves the formation of specialized protrusions known as invadosomes. We recently discovered a crucial function for the cation channel TRPM7 in the formation of invadosomes. TRPM7 affects the cytoskeleton both by allowing Ca2+ influx into the cytoplasm, and by direct phosphorylation of myosins through its integral kinase domain. We have identified a large cytoskeletal complex around TRPM7 that contains many structural components of invadosomes, as well as signaling intermediates frequently upregulated during tumor progression.
In this project we will focus on the role of TRPM7 as a ‘master-regulator’ of invadosomes. We will study how Ca2+ influx affects invadosome formation and function, and cell migration. A second focus will be the regulation of membrane PIP2, a messenger that affects many cytoskeletal proteins and that appears to function downstream of Ca2+ influx. This interdisciplinary project is funded by the Dutch Cancer Society (KWF). It fits in a long-term collaboration with dr. F.N. van Leeuwen at the Nijmegen Centre for Molecular Life Sciences, where a second PhD student will be employed who focuses on molecular aspects of the project.
PhD-student in Mode group division optical transmission systems
Optical fibre has a huge communication capacity, and can carry many data traffic streams simultaneously. Usually single-mode fibre is deployed, and in the fibre many wavelength channels can be created to transport these data streams in parallel (wavelength division multiplexing). Multimode fibre, however, can offer an additional multiplexing dimension: the whole set of guided modes can be subdivided in subsets, and each of these groups can constitute an independent transmission channel. Thus by mode group division multiplexing the capacity of a multimode fibre can be multiplied, and wavelength division multiplexing within each mode group channel yields another multiplication factor.
In the new European Integrated Project MODE-GAP, part of the EC’s 7th Framework Programme, mode group division multiplexing is to be investigated in combination with novel photonic bandgap multimode fibres and mid-infrared transmission technologies in order to achieve a breakthrough in the transmission capacity of a fibre link. The MODE-GAP project is to be executed by an international consortium of industrial and academic research group

What does it take to get a Division II track and field scholarship?
I’m a senior in high school and wondering there’s anyway I would be able to get a track scholarship.
I am a girl, and I do the 100 meter dash, long jump, triple jump, and the 4×100.
I am wondering how good I have to be at those 4 events to get a scholarship.
Thanks!
