Analytical Team Leader – East Midlands

A leading independent technology centre, who has a massive presence in Europe, and offers a range of testing and consultancy services. An exciting opportunity is now available for an Analytical Team Leader, to manage the material testing laboratory and manage a team of 10.

As an Analytical Team Leader, you will manage a laboratory which carries out approximately 4000 testing jobs per year, and the majority of testing involves testing banned or restricted substances.

As an Analytical Team Leader, your role will be varied and will involve managing staff and also being hands on. So you will also enjoy working at the bench, and have a good working knowledge of HPLC, GC-MS, LCMS and ICP. You will also be involved in developing new analytical methods in response to customer and legislative needs.

The ideal candidate will be educated to degree level in Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry or equivalent and have a good understanding and working knowledge of Analytical Chemistry, understand the following analytical techniques, HPLC, GC-MS, LCMS and ICP. You must have previous industry experience and previous laboratory management experience is essential as you will be managing a team of approximately 10 staff. Experience of method development would be beneficial.

The bulk of the responsibilities for this role, will reside within the Porous Materials characterisation group, for which the jobholder will be required to undertake a range of measurements including: Total/Active surface area determination by gas chemisorption, Porosity measurement by gas adsorption and mercury intrusion methods, Helium pycnometry, Particle sizing by laser diffraction and Zeta Potential measurement. Additional responsibilities will require the jobholder to provide support in the processing of samples for spectroscopic and elemental analysis, on a flexible basis according to sample demand.
A key element of this role will be the processing of raw data into quality results – requiring a keen appreciation and application of the principles of valid analytical measurement.
Suitable candidates will be educated to degree level in a physical science and have some experience of analytical measurement. Moreover, familiarity with a range of A&C methods selected from Pore Structure and Particle Size determination, and Spectroscopy (e.g. FTIR, UV-vis, Raman) would be highly desirable.

A major Biopharmaceutical client has an opportunity for a Scientist to join them in a Technical Development capacity, supporting Technical Development of Protein based projects for API development. This is a temporary role for 3 months.

The successful candidate will build upon their current technical expertise to support development projects – this may require execution of development or analytical tasks.

For example, you will:
· Develop new methods to support process development
· Responsible for protein handling, and analysis
· Gel Electrophoresis, Protein Digestion, HPLC, Affinity Chromatography, Mass Spectrometry.
· Participate in project team meetings
· Report on project progress to more senior scientists or project leaders

In addition, the role will require:
· Maintenance of comprehensive records of work performed
· Working with a project team and sometimes with other departments, such as EHS, QA and Production
· Presenting results
· Compliance with regulatory requirements and corporate policies and goals.

Suitable candidates will hold a minimum of a degree in Chemistry or other relevant subject together with an ability to demonstrate competent use of necessary methods.
They will also be a good team player, problem solver, and be analytically minded.
